"You think it's easy to be Father's good and dutiful son? That I like having to be the responsible big brother and example for the rest of His angels? Honestly...it SUCKS! But I have a duty to oversee Heaven and His great creations so it doesn't matter what I want. Unlike my brothers who seem to only ever think about what they want."
— Michael

Michael is the oldest archangel and the first of the angels that were created by God. Among his fellow archangels were his brothers Samael, Lucifer, Raphael and Gabriel. They fought with their father against the Darkness. Besides God, Michael is the only one that the Powers yield to. He ruled Heaven in the wake of his Father's absence after Lucifer's Rebellion until the events of the Apocalypse.

At the climax before the final battle of the Apocalypse, Michael had been thrown into Lucifer's Cage where he stayed locked away for five years on the surface but was centuries of time within the Cage. During that time, he and his vessel Adam Milligan went and developed a bond with each other, and he took him under his wing and helped mold him into a smart and strong warrior. In the wake of his time away from Heaven, it fell into chaos and civil war. Eventually, the rogue angel Metatron tricked Castiel into helping to bring about The Fall. It was then that The Powers began to gain momentum in their bid to free him.

He was finally released by the Heavenly Saint Daniel Leonard to resume his former position as the Leader of the Heavenly Host and to deal with his freed brother Samael. When the Darkness was released and moved to take possession of the Daniel, Michael became resolved to free the human from the grip of his father's greatest nemesis even if he knew it would likely be his end. His greatest challenge, and temptation, is the return of his father and his brother Samael reveals his plan to usurp the whole cosmic order with the two of them at the helm, replacing their father and uncle.

Background[]

After the War with the Darkness and sealing the Leviathan away, God created a new batch of angels, a lower branch than he and his archangel brothers and sisters, known as The Powers and placed them directly under Michael's command to assist him should the monstrous serpents escape Purgatory. When God created humans he decreed that they were to be loved and asked that the angels bow to them. Michael was the very first angel to bow to man by his father's command. HIs brother Lucifer refused and tried to turn Michael away from them, but he refused to go along with it and soon witnessed as his father went and banished Lucifer from Heaven.

Michael TEA (ancient vessel)

Michael interacting with Janis

As the angels were tasked to watch over humanity, Michael roamed the Earth until he eventually came across a human woman named Janis. Michael found her beautiful, in both looks and in soul as she had a fond and healthy appreciation for the world around her. He started to favor being in her valley and eventually made himself known to her. At first, she was a little overwhelmed to be singled out by an archangel, but she grew to be comfortable around him. After a while, the two had fallen in love and eventually consummated their relationship and soon Janis had fallen pregnant. Michael went and stayed by her side to protect her and help her through the complications of having their child as he knew that past women that carried children of angels had perished giving birth. When it was time for their child to be born, Michael used his grace to help her in delivering their child, quelling the unrestrained bursts of power their child released and soon gazed upon his newborn nephilim son. Michael was both awed by him and with the fact that Janis had miraculously survived the delivery. They went to name their son Mikhail.

Mikhail (child)

Michael's son Mikhail as a child

He would drop in from time to time over the years as Mikhail steadily grew from a baby to a young boy, at a surprisingly normal human rate compared to other nephilim, taking to playing melodies from a harp for his son. When his son matured into a man, he saw that he had ceased getting older but the humans around him, including his mother, were still growing older and soon were dying. Michael moved to teach him how to fight and become at peace with his angelic heritage. After Janis' time had come, the two of them had buried her and together warded her grave for protection before taking him off to fully induct him as part of the Host of Heaven. His affections for a human, and even showing great love for the child of their union made his younger brother Lucifer snap with bitterness and envy.

Michael lead Heaven's forces when Lucifer rebelled against their father over his high opinions of Humanity due to his jealousy and the mental maneuvering done to him by Samael. When Abel had gone to Heaven and Cain had become a demon and started terrorizing the Earth, Michael approached Abel with an offer to join the Heavenly Host as an angel. Abel agreed and Michael transformed his soul into an angel's grace. According to Samael, Michael had fought with his fellow archangels against the Knights of Hell and after that fight only he, Raphael and Gabriel remained. He defeated Lucifer and cast him down to Hell in Lucifer's Cage.

He was angry to see that Samael had remained unpunished for his role in helping to encourage Lucifer and aiding him in his rebellion. However, over time he was able to convince God that Samael was getting out of control with his seduction, corruption and antics against Humanity. Not to mention all of the creatures that his brother had spawned that were creating rising amounts of chaos on Earth. Michael and Gabriel captured him and proceeded to castrate him as punishment before they locked him in Heaven's prison. It was also during this time that God had to unleash the Deluge to try and undo the chaos that Samael's offspring had begun to unleash. Since Mikhail didn't have leave to board the Ark and survive the cataclysm, he had Joseph try to save his son by bringing him to Heaven for safety. But during the battle, Mikhail forced Joseph to leave him to try and save Noah from Dagiel, sacrificing his only means to be saved in the process, and was soon killed when the celestial waters hit him. This tragedy left Michael brokenhearted and he spent some time alone to mourn his son.

When he returned to Heaven, he found out that God had left and there didn't seem to be any trace of him. To help locate him, Michael quickly called forth Fate to try and learn where he was but she didn't tell Michael anything. With Heaven having no ruler and the angels needing direction, Michael became resolved to lose himself in his duties as the new Ruler of Heaven. Michael's first order upon his ascension was to forbid angels from birthing nephilim into this world with his son firmly on his mind.

Michael obeyed God's command to not directly interfere with Humanity until the Apocalypse but during the Dark Ages there was a significant increase demon activity. There were hunters to try and hold back the tide but they were lacking in knowledge and numbers to handle so many threats at once. He saw that Humanity was severely in danger but knew he couldn't directly interfere. Secretly, he and the Powers went to a select group of humans and bestowed them the knowledge and expertise to combat the high-level demons and calamities they were causing. One of their trademark gifts to them was an enochian exorcism that can imprison demons so far in the depths of Hell that they could only be released by the use of a Devil's Gate. This order continued to exist to serve Michael and the Powers with hiding powerful and sensitive artifacts and powers on their behalf such as the Holy Grail. When the high-level threat of demons diminished, the contact Michael and the Powers had with them dropped drastically and the group's numbers declined somewhat over the centuries though those that remained still stayed firm.

Over the millenia he kept his position of Heaven's ruler until the events of the Apocalypse started. Lucifer was freed due to the 66 seals being broken and Michael was ready to lead Heaven in battle against him. However, his destined vessel Dean Winchester resisted giving his consent to be his vessel. Michael left the task of getting Dean's consent up to Zachariah. He focused on leading the Powers in the war against Lucifer's elite demons and the Grigori or Watchers. He couldn't directly fight without a vessel, so he had to become an observer and as a result began to lose his patience with Zachariah.

He gave him one more chance and Zachariah suggested using the Winchesters dead half-brother Adam Milligan as bait to try to get Dean to finally consent. Zachariah summoned him and he came in time to see that Zachariah was dead and that the brothers were running away. He sensed that Adam Milligan was ready and willing to consent and knew that though he was not his predestined vessel, he was suitable enough to contain him and whisked him away to gain his consent. Adam Milligan gave Michael his consent and Michael possessed him and finally gained a vessel to walk on Earth.

Michael

Michael's vessel Adam Milligan

Now that he had a vessel, he fought alongside his fellow Powers and began to decimate Lucifer's forces alongside them. He sensed that Lucifer gained his true vessel's consent and went off to face his brother in the area that they were destined to fight, Stull Cemetary in Lawrence, Kansas. Lucifer had the Grigori nearby and he tasked the Powers to fight them and keep the battle between the two archangels. He then arrived at Stull Cemetary to see Lucifer in Sam Winchester's body. The two shared words and Michael refused to go against their father like Lucifer wanted. Michael may not have wanted to fight and kill his brother but he knew he had to. Before they could start Dean Winchester arrived and Michael demanded he leave as he had no right to be there any longer since he refused to consent to be his vessel. Michael noticed too late that Castiel had arrived and thrown a molotov of holy fire at him to banish him away. He regained himself and returned in time to see that the door to the Cage had been opened and Sam Winchester had gained control.

Open Cage

Michael falls into the Cage with Lucifer, Sam and Adam

He went to stop him from plunging his brother back in the cage and acting against his Father's will but Sam dragged him into the cage with them.

The Cage then sealed itself behind them and effectively locked Michael away. After the Powers defeated the Grigori they returned to the site to despair and rage at the banishment of their general. Soon enough Heaven fell into disorder and chaos without him.

Chaos[]

Michael, trapped in the cage still possessing Adam Milligan, was unable to rule Heaven and dominion of it fell to Raphael. This led to civil war and in turn led to Castiel opening Purgatory and releasing the Leviathan. Michael couldn't lead the Powers against them like God had tasked him to do but regardless the Powers had managed to destroy most of them when Dean Winchester killed Dick Roman. Even with the Leviathan threat quelled there still remained much in-fighting and power grabbing amongst the countless factions of angels.

While in the Cage, he was left to suffer different physical and mental torments alongside Adam Milligan. At first, Michael treated Adam as if he didn't exist so as not to be hindered by him. A series of mental and physical tortures and anguishes began in the Cage yet Michael bared through them one by one. But when Michael was put through a trial of seemingly endless darkness and time dragged on with nothing to do or think of, he felt his mental resolve slipping. When he found Adam, he decided that it might be necessary to work with the human to better bear his new situation. To get them through this ordeal, he found himself falling into his General like nature and began teaching Adam the art of combat as a means of distraction. Michael soon even began to share things of Creation's history, Heaven, and even of the Winchester bloodline. However, when the Cage started to deliver the torture of reliving the darkest and painful moments of their lives, Michael was forced to bear witness to seeing his son Mikhail losing his life to The Deluge which greatly wounded him and revealed his personal secret and torment to Adam.

With him being trapped there it ironically protected him from the effects of Metatron's spell that caused the angels to fall from Heaven. Topside, Joseph never forgot about Michael or forsook his loyalty to him and proclaimed Michael as Heaven's 'true leader'. Occasionally he would hear the distant prayers from the Powers and soon those of the human Daniel Leonard. It turned out that this human was the Heavenly Saint and heard that they were working to free him from the Cage. He was instructed by Death that the chaos brought forth by The Fall could be undone by Michael's power and would re-open Heaven to the angels again.

Cemetary

On September 29th, the Feast of Saint Michael, The Powers, The Battalion and The Saint all gathered in Stull Cemetery. In the spot where Michael had fallen in the Cage with Lucifer, Daniel Leonard performed the ritual to free an imprisoned angel. Using the key tailor made for him a portal was opened which Michael rode through until he made it back to Earth. He inspired awe as well as other high emotions on all the witnesses when he broke through and expanded his wings in the form of golden fire. His first sight after being freed was of Daniel who had perceived his true visage without being overwhelmed due to his gifts. However, the strain of the ritual made the Saint collapse as the portal closed.

Season 10[]

Reclaiming Heaven[]

When Daniel collapsed but was seen to still be alive Michael transported everyone at Stull instantly back to the Paradise Pavilion. Once there he and The Powers saw that the Winchesters had attacked the sanctuary and Metatron had been captured by Camael.

His first order of business was going to Heaven and undoing Metatron's spell. Heaven was reopened and the reapers started to bring in the stranded souls again. Michael then ordered for Metatron to be locked away in Heaven's Prison for his crimes and interrogated on where both Samael's operations as well as where he had sent the Demon Tablet though he had refused to say anything. Michael then went to grant the angels their wings back but at his present state of being he would only be able to do it for a few at a time. He started with the Powers as a reward for their unwavering loyalty.

For Abel, after learning that he was officially sworn in, he raised the power of his grace to the same level as the other Powers and restored his wings as well. He also reviewed Gadreel's situation and the former renegade seemed ready for any decision he made and left himself to his mercy. Michael, with Daniel and Joseph's support as well as Gadreel's honorable actions after his freedom and his resolute attitude, decided to rule that the former renegade be pardoned. Michael also began to lay down the law on the angels in order to put them back on the right track of things, such as have a faction of angels executed as they had a history of conspiring with demons to show that such despicable actions would not be accepted.

Michael posed

Michael meeting with Daniel Leonard in the Paradise Pavilion

When Daniel Leonard regained consciousness, Michael requested to have a private meeting with him. Gadreel collected him and brought him to Michael where they began to speak about the current situation and issues that they resolved and had left to deal with. The two spoke for a number of hours of what had happened during their respective absences, of The Deluge, the Winchesters and Gadreel. He revealed what he had done to Metatron and told him that the angel was after the Angel Tablet which Michael was using to replenish his strength faster. However, he also told Daniel that Metatron did manage to send off the Demon Tablet. When the topic of what had happened to Daniel when he used the Freedom Key turned up, Michael simply said that he wasn't sure though he secretly had his theories. Joseph then arrived to make a report and Daniel left to let the two angels speak in privacy. Michael remarked that Daniel was helping to remind him why he was the first to bow to mankind on his father's command. Joseph then told him of a trail of demonic activity linked to Dean Winchester and Michael guessed that he was now a demon due to the human bearing the Mark of Cain. Michael expressed his anger for Dean's foolishness to take the Mark solely for the purpose of destroying his enemies, not realizing that he was branding himself with 'pure evil'. Ezekiel then arrived to inform Michael of the angel Hannah and her faction were wishing to join the Host back under his leadership. Joseph expressed his misgivings about Hannah but Ezekiel then reported her slaying the renegade angel Anita as proof of her loyalty. Michael told Ezekiel to allow her back in but he confided to Joseph that though he is allowing it, she was to be watched for signs of treachery.

Hannah met secretly with Castiel and informed him that Michael was now heading everything on Earth from the Paradise Pavilion. He officially classed both Metatron and Castiel as renegades and had formally announced Gadreel's pardon and personally appointed him as the new personal guard to the Heavenly Saint, which had shocked the angel.

Soon enough, after Thanksgiving, Michael had received news that Daniel and Gadreel had come across the renegade angel Eligor. The fallen Grigori had managed to kill Gadreel but Daniel had been fortunate enough to banish him away before he could be killed himself. Not only that, he learned that Eligor's vessel happened to be the man that had killed Daniel's father when he was a young teen. Michael guessed that Samael was trying to hinder the Saint by sending an angel with that particular vessel and Eligor would no doubt try to go after Daniel again. He didn't explain how this move would exactly 'hinder' Daniel when Joseph asked him. Abel quickly approached him and asked if he could take over and protect Daniel. Michael reminded him that he was still on the lookout for Cain and couldn't let his personal feelings against Eligor overtake his priorities. Abel argued that it already was personal seeing how Cain was his brother and Eligor is a part of it. Michael agreed though made it clear that it was against his better judgment and warned Abel that the Saint's well-being was paramount over bringing down the Grigori. Abel stated that he wasn't his descendants before he departed.

Michael's Power Issue[]

In the weeks that followed, Michael maintained a constant presence at the Pavilion and hid himself from prying eyes whenever business affairs or war councils weren't in session. During the latest session, when talk came of Samael's latest son being sighted, Michael quickly excused himself before disappearing away. Many of the angels there wondered why Michael had yet to go on the hunt for Samael personally and what he could be waiting for. Also, some were wondering why Michael hadn't restored the wings of more angels other than the Powers and a handful of others. Jedediah and Ezekiel had privately begun to be concerned by Michael's lack of proactive action, as just staying put wasn't his usual style but Joseph waived their concerns off. Sensing a burst of unstable energy, the three angels went to investigate and stumbled onto Michael kneeling on the floor, seemingly in pain, as the angel tablet lay not too far away, its marks glowing just before Michael went and passed out.

Michael feeling weak

Michael feeling the weight of his weakened grace

Joseph privately confronted him about what was happening and though Michael tried to lie about being careless with the tablet, Joseph correctly guessed that Michael had been siphoning energy from it, more than what was safe, even for an archangel like him. Michael then explained that he wasn't feeling his usual strength prior from being in the Cage. Michael supposed that it shouldn't have been a surprise given how Lucifer needed time and a whole lot of demon blood to regain his full power after his freedom. While his time there had not been as long, it had indeed damaged his grace more extensively than he could've imagined and had been mangled too heavily to heal quickly. He further explained that restoring the wings of the Powers and the few other angels he'd chosen had hindered his own recovery. With Samael going strong, and a growing threat emerging from his offspring, Michael felt he was in no position to be or look weak so he had to resort to extreme measures to try and rejuvenate himself back to full power. Joseph wondered why Michael had been hiding this and he confessed that he was worried that if word of him not being at his best got out, then the angels on their side would then defect and run off to join his brother who was currently at his full strength so secrecy was the only choice. Joseph understood and moved to help keep his condition a secret from the other angels, even from Jedediah and Ezekiel.

Michael had told him that he had tried contacting Camael and had her task Kevin Tran to try and look for a way to revitalize damaged grace, not specifying that it was for him. Kevin managed to find mentions of a spell but the mechanics of it didn't seem to make too much sense to him. He claimed he would need more research material to decipher it. Much of the other sources of knowledge or relics and tools which might or could be useful had been lost or plundered over the years due to the Apocalypse, Raphael and Castiel's Civil War, and/or The Fall. Michael theorized that there was one place on Earth left where they could find what he would need, the Men of Letters Bunker. Joseph commented that if there was anything then the Winchesters wouldn't part with it for Michael's sake. Joseph then made some comment to settle down and explained that it was to his vessel who had laughed at the thought of Sam and Dean using their cache of resources for anyone other than themselves. Suddenly, Michael found himself letting out a small laugh as he had been inspired with an idea to get what they needed, but it would ironically require him to make a "leap of faith".

Leaving Adam Milligan[]

Michael ascending

Michael seen leaving for Heaven from a distance

He then seemingly went and abandoned his vessel Adam in an empty parking lot, where he was discovered by a couple who quickly moved to help him and call for an ambulance.

This move was sensed by multiple people and beings all at once. Daniel Leonard was sleeping when the sudden surge of archangelic grace left the Earth and made him wake with a start. Kevin Tran also felt something stir within him from this event though didn't understand what the feeling meant before he called Daniel and they discovered why from Abel and Camael. At the Pavilion, Jedediah and Ezekiel had felt Michael's presence far from the Pavilion and asked Joseph if he knew why he had abandoned his vessel and but he simply told them that he had urgent matters to see to in Heaven and left him to see to things until his return. Despite their curiosity, Joseph's tone made it clear that the matter should be left there. Samael and Barbatos had also sensed that Michael's sudden surge of power as he left and were curious as it seemed unlike him. Barbatos wanted to personally investigate but Samael told him that they had to be cautious when it came to unexpected moves from his brother. Amos was dispatched by them to find out why instead.

Adam had been quickly found first by Sam and Dean and they were surprised to find that Michael wasn't possessing him anymore. Adam claimed that he didn't remember anything from being possessed as the last memory he has was being locked in that room Zachariah brought him and a flash of warm and blinding light before waking up in the hospital. When the renegade Amos had found Adam, he moved to try to take him back to Samael but Sam and Dean moved to try and stop him. A fight broke out and while Amos was distracted, Adam tried to hinder him by whacking him with a bedpan, but that only made the renegade angry. He felt that Samael wouldn't mind Adam being a little beat up when he brought him back and he personally had a lot of pent up anger for Michael and guessed that taking it out on his abandoned vessel was as close as he would get to the real thing. He was killed by Dean before he could. Samael and Barbatos had then gone to that same hospital where they found that Amos had been killed and sensed traces of Michael's presence coming from Adam's abandoned hospital bed. After learning that Michael had truly abandoned his vessel, Barbatos was confused by what this meant but Samael simply smiled and let out a chuckle in amusement.

When Adam was given a look over by Castiel, he detected that there was indeed no trace of Michael's presence within him any longer and assured him that his body was his own. However, after Adam was sent to get some rest, Castiel informed Dean and Sam that he did feel that there was a trace of Michael's grace within Adam's body. When Sam was worried of what that could mean, given his own recent possession by Samael, Castiel assured him that it was a tiny and residual amount, likely due to Michael possessing Adam for so long, as no one had ever been possessed by an Archangel as long as Adam had and lived. He didn't believe it to be dangerous or an issue and guessed that Michael's grace would dissipate on its own in time.

Adam had been sleeping soundly until he started having a nightmare that echoed Michael's memories of his son Mikhail. He lived in a memory of Michael playing a song as his son played out in a grass field until his image changed into himself as an adult just before a rush of water came for him and he screamed out for his father right before he was hit, waking Adam in a cold sweat. Later on, Adam decided to go off and visit his hometown of Windom, Minnesota where demons had been laid in wait and attempted to ambush him. Using his enhanced senses given to him by Michael's grace, Adam was able to detect them and then fought them off with the fighting skills he had been taught by the archangel in the Cage.

The Archangel's Gambit[]

Adam had found a tome written by a Man of Letters scholar by the name of Nolan Behan who had done extensive study into angels and had even experimented with angelic power and the Holy Grail. This tome had his theories and successful findings which included a spell to restore a weakened or depleted archangel's grace and condition back to full power. After Adam finished deciphering the spell, he reached out in prayer to Michael who then appeared before him as a manifestation of himself.

Adam EndAgain2

Adam making a chess move against Michael as they discuss their plans

As Adam slept, he dreamed that he was in a fancy room where he was in front of a grand chess set sitting across from Michael. The two of them were discussing Adam's progress and research while they played against each other. He went to move a rook forward and then Adam went to take it with his bishop. He listened as Adam filled him in on everything he learned about Nolan Behan's history and his experiments with the Holy Grail which led to the creation of the spell they needed to restore Michael's condition and recharge his grace back to full power. Michael informed Adam that time was growing short as Cain's death seemed to have lit some fires with Samael's side. Adam understood though couldn't help but point out that it hadn't been easy to find and decipher the spell as Behan had coded all the spells and powerful secrets in his book under three separate languages blended together in order to keep the information safe and was only able to read any of it because of Michael teaching him practically "every other language known and unknown to mankind". Michael then amusingly pointed out that Adam hated his linguistics training and thought it pointless back in the Cage but is now reaping the benefits. Adam then told him that he had the spell fully translated word for word though the ingredients would be a problem.

First they would need the Holy Grail to perform the spell with and Michael informed him that it was still safe with him to use at any time. There were also three ingredients they would need. The first ingredient was ash from God's fire, which Michael saw would be ash from the Burning Bush. The second was water of a divine cleansing, which Michael saw would be water blessed from Jesus' baptism. Both of them would be tricky to get but doable yet the third was going to be the real problem, blood of an archangel and Adam informed him it had to be from another archangel than him and the only other one was Samael with Lucifer locked in the Cage. Adam then told him that Samael wouldn't be their only choice. Michael narrowed his eyes in interest before he went and moved his knight forward and then called Check. Adam then woke up called him out as a 'smartass' for having to end their conversation with him having the high note.

As Joseph was meditating out up on the roof of the Paradise Pavilion, his eyes flashed blue as Michael contacted him and appeared before him in the image of Adam. He told Joseph that Adam had found a spell that was everything they were looking for but they would need some ingredients for it and Michael needed him to go off and collect them. Joseph stood up and asked where he needed to head off to first.

Inconsistencies in Adam's behavior starts making Dean suspicious, and he shares his suspicions with Castiel, who keeps a close eye on Adam and eventually discovers that Adam stole and hid Behan's book and has been using Enochian magics exclusive to angels. After he is subdued by Adam, he realizes that Adam has been working for Michael the whole time and Adam reveals that his time in the Cage has weakened Michael and Adam has been looking for a way to help him. Thanks to Behan's research, he was able to find a spell that could fully heal Michael and restore him to full power. He informs Castiel that only one final ingredient to the spell is needed and Sam and Dean are hunting it down at that moment. Adam then gathers some things and leaves the Bunker where he prays off to Joseph.

Sam and Dean were dealing with twin nephilim Glena and Edmon Fuller. Apparently, Edmon had been using his powers to curse and hurt people around their home town while Glena has been using hers to heal and help people to try and compensate for her brother's actions. When the situation began to get too out of control, Sam was forced to kill Edmon which made Glena fly into a rage. She moved to try and kill Sam and avenge her brother but before Dean could move to stop her, she was stabbed and killed by Adam with one of Joseph's angel swords. Castiel managed to arrive right after and exposed Adam's alliance with Michael. Adam didn't deny Castiel's accusation and told Sam and Dean that while he had claimed to not remember anything from his possession, he had actually remembered every moment, including his time in the Cage. He told them that Michael had looked out for him and helped him become strong and keep sane during their long confinement together. While he did call Michael an 'annoying, stubborn and arrogant smartass', he said that Michael was the only real friend and family he actually had. Now, Michael was in trouble and Adam found he could help him, which he could thanks to the archangel blood that he could get from the dead Fuller twins to complete the spell to heal him.

Dean pulled his gun on Adam but Joseph arrived, fighting off both Dean and Castiel, buying Adam time to do the spell. Armed with the Holy Grail and other ingredients, Adam moved to perform the spell with Sam watching him as he was frozen by an enochian spell. Adam completed the spell and moved to summon Michael after he had consumed the restorative elixir he had created. Michael's essence appeared above them all and white noise filled the area, making Sam and Dean move to cover their ears. Adam was unaffected as he looked straight up and gave his consent which caused Michael to descend upon him in a beam of blinding light, enveloping his body. Once rejoined with his vessel, Michael immediately felt the effects of the elixir Adam drank take effect and let himself bask in his recovery. After the light faded Dean, Sam, Castiel and Joseph could see a content look upon his/Adam's face as he was levitating a few feet off the ground. Michael then let himself descend and land feet flat to the ground and opened his eyes to show the glow of his grace.

Michael Faces the Winchester Brothers and His Own[]

Michael 2014

Michael faces down the Winchesters and Castiel

Joseph approached Michael and cautiously asked if he was okay. Michael didn't answer him right away, seeming to be lost in thought, before he thrust his hand out and easily launched out an energy blast that caused a mini-explosion, to the awe and fear of the Winchesters and Castiel. Michael then assured Joseph that he was great before he ordered Joseph to take the Grail and wait for him back at the Pavilion while he catches up with the Winchesters. After Joseph left them, Michael takes time to acknowledge each of them. Castiel for calling him assbutt and lighting him on fire, Sam for his noticeable recovery from the Cage, and Dean seeming more irritable and ill-tempered than ever though wasn't too surprised given his acquisition of the Mark of Cain. The three of them moved to ready their weapons but Michael rolled his eyes and extends his hand instantly sending all three of them flying off into the air and landing painfully on their backs. As they lay there, Michael scoffs that they had gotten quite full of themselves over the last few years. Dean heatedly pointed out that they did manage to beat him once which Michael calmly countered that they didn't actually beat him, but swooped in and took advantage of a literal misstep, a mistake on his part but one he has learned from. Sam then accuses Michael of playing a dirty trick by using Adam to do his dirty work and get to them. Michael tells them that he didn't use Adam at all, he trusted him. When Sam spats that he brainwashed him, Michael gets a subliminal message from Adam and lets him talk to them, defending his actions and maintaining that he is not some puppet of Michael's but his friend before Michael switches back when he feels Adam has said enough. Michael admits that he hadn't thought much of Adam at the beginning, simply means to an end for fighting his brother. He tells of their time together in the Cage, Adam's progress with him, and how he had let himself come to like him, sarcastically quipping that he'll even let go of that 'annoying smartass' comment he made.

He then wonders if this is what his father had planned for him all along. When Castiel asks what he means, Michael asks why if Dean was meant to be his true vessel, why was it Castiel, a lower angel, that had been sent to retrieve Dean from Hell and not Joseph or another Power or even himself? Michael had known of Dean's importance and yet had hardly given him any true thought or effort. The only time he had moved to step in personally had been when Adam had gotten involved. That out of all the people in the world, it was Adam that he had been with all this time and him who had just succeeded in performing a spell that made Michael regain his strength and feel better than he's felt in years and not Dean. Before they could get further into this, Michael feels something approaching and there is a strong ringing sounding through the air which the Winchesters recognize as angel speak. Michael narrows his eyes as he realizes who it is and soon enough, comes face to face with Samael. The two archangels stare hard at each other for a moment until Samael then drops the hard stare and openly smirks at Michael, casually greeting him though Michael still has his narrowed gaze and remains silent. When Samael points out that its been so long since they'd seen each other, he plays at trying to think of when exactly that time was. Michael, annoyed and angry with Samael, darkly smirks as he asks how could his brother forget their last meeting, as it was when he and Gabriel had gone and castrated him using his sword, turning Samael's pleasant demeanor into a hard, dark glare that frightens Sam and Castiel, where they are still off to the side with Dean, who openly snorts at the story. Michael's own hard look vanishes and he seems to actually loosen and settle as he says that was the actually the best and last time he and Gabriel really bonded. Samael snorts and tells Michael he seemed to at least have developed a better sense of humor since they last met. Michael then notes that despite his castration, he has gone and worked around that seeing as how he is spawning children again, casting a gaze on the bodies of the Fullers. Samael lets himself smile again before he explains that he has Sam to thank for before he looks over and thanks him, to the human's bitter anger. Samael then looks at the bodies of his twin nephilim children and then snaps his fingers which suddenly makes their bodies explode and disintegrate into white dust. He hardly reacts but that actually makes Michael glare at his brother and causes Dean, Sam and Castiel to try and get far away from the two archangels.

Michael and Samael hardly react to the three escapees as they keep their gazes on each other. Samael tells his brother that his move to release his vessel he had surprised a great many, including himself which he smugly states is not something easy to do. He explained to Michael that he knew not to expect any real activity from him so soon after his release because he knew that Michael would be affected by the Cage as he had helped their father with its design. Even though it was only a couple of years, the Cage would've diminished him somewhat and he guessed Michael would want to be cautious. He had informed his angelic and demonic followers that Michael's personal involvement would be indirect and negligible for a good while so there would be no need to worry. Yet, when Michael let Adam go, Samael couldn't help but let himself just laugh at how his predictable, dullard brother had stumped him. Suddenly, Crowley and his demons became nervous and his renegades were beginning to question him but Samael knew there had to be more to it but couldn't find a solution that made sense to him. Now, after learning of what had happened, he admits to Michael that his best predictions hadn't even been close. He had actually entrusted his vessel with an important and vital mission, concerning his own personal well-being; Samael admits he never even considered that as a possibility and can assume that his big bro has gone through some changes since they last met.

Michael says that he can't say the same as Samael hasn't changed in the slightest. He's still causes problems and does whatever he wants and has no semblance of responsibility, for anything or anyone, especially not even for his own children. Samael then grins and sees that Michael is finally getting them to what he has been wanting to get to all along. Michael says that this isn't about...him, but Samael says that it's always been about him and has been ever since the Deluge. When Samael tries to audibly remember what his name was, Michael's spits out that his name was Mikhail. His clenched fist starts to light up a bit with his grace and Samael tells Michael to settle down as it was so long ago and he could still go on and have more kids, especially with a pretty handsome looking vessel. Samael then goes and tells him that while Lucifer had been pissed that his idol older brother had actually gone and 'slummed it with a chimp', he had actually been amused and eager to learn what kind of woman could've actually broke through Michael's rock hard shell. Then Samael started teasing and saying scandalous things about Janis, and when he went and said that he would've liked to have had a go with her if she hadn't 'popped' after delivering Michael's package, Michael finally lost his composure.

He went and threw off an energy blast at Samael which hit his brother square in the chest and made him get pushed back a couple of feet, leaving drag tracks in the ground but his brother stayed on his feet. Samael then went and retaliated by firing an energy blast of his own which Michael intercepted and blocked with his hands. Michael fumbled a bit where he stood but it lasted only for a second and he looked back to his brother to see that he had drawn his sword. Samael revealed that he knew that Michael hadn't been able to find his blade yet but Michael didn't care and he was prepared to fight without it. Samael told him to relax as he hadn't actually come here for a fight with Michael at all. He informed Michael that they would fight if that was what he really wanted but there were still steps that needed to be in place before they could. Yet he assured him that things all seemed to be set in motion. Michael demanded Samael to tell him what he was really planning but his brother merely smirked and said that he didn't want to spoil the surprise. He then vanished, the sound of his wings flapping echoing through area. Michael stood there, glaring out, before he let out an angered shout and stomped his foot into the ground, making the ground crack and thunder clap in the air as he made contact.

When Michael returned to the Paradise Pavilion, he was enthusiastically greeted by Joseph, Ezekiel and Jedediah. Michael shrugged off their praises and ordered them to assemble their squads. The three angels immediately teleported away and left Michael alone in his private room. Once they were gone, Michael was confronted by a vision of Adam. He asked if Michael was okay and the archangel simply answered he was fine. Adam quickly reminded him that he couldn't lie to him and promised that he would help him find and hand his brother Samael's ass back to him. Adam asked if he was up for a quick chess match before the Powers came back but Michael turned him down. With that, Adam vanished, leaving Michael alone in the room. He then headed over towards the mirror and waved his hand over it, his reflection being replaced with the image of his son Mikhail.

The Mark is Removed[]

Michael was on the roof of the Pavilion, hovering in mediation, as he had a mental sparring session with Adam. They traded blade blows as well as ideas on what Samael was ultimately up to. Michael knew that underneath his chaotic machinations, Samael always had an end in sight. His treatment and words about his children came to mind and Michael thought they might hold the key. Though between his nephilim son Alan, his demonic son Malphas, and his contested son Cain, he couldn't see what that might be. Their pondering was interrupted by Joseph. He tells Michael that Abel was returning with Daniel and that Rhea had also come back with a gift. Michael went to the Pavilion's entrance hall to see Rhea there and she presented him with his sword.

Out on the Pavilion's grounds, a small group of angels and Battalion humans silently watched as Michael, armed with his sword, was being surrounded and by Joseph, Rhea, Abel, Ezekiel, Jedediah and Camael. The six Powers all had their dual swords out and were circling him, poised to attack. Jedediah was the first to move in to attack but Michael quickly blocked his strike with his sword. When Jedediah tried to strike at him with his other sword, Michael quickly caught his wrist and then flipped him over onto his back. Jedediah quickly rolled out of the way as Ezekiel moved to take a shot. One by one, each of the Powers moved to try and attack Michael but he managed to stave off each one, with expert sword wielding technique to the awe of all their spectators. Joseph was the last one to spar with him and after he held him at sword point, Joseph moved to step back and he, along with the other Powers, bowed their heads to him. Michael let himself crack a small grin as he let his eyes go over his blade, happy to have his old weapon/friend in his possession again. The atmosphere was changed when Raguel teleported in from Heaven to report that he learned where Alan Samson was, and that Samael was with him.

Personality[]

"Its easy to criticize Michael until you spend millennia of ignoring your personal needs to manage Heaven, all the angels, and preparing for future battles to determine the fate of the world every day. Then you'll start asking: How did he ever do it?"
— Joseph on Michael

Michael has a serious mindset when it comes to his duties. As the one left in charge of Heaven in the wake of his father's disappearance he carries the burden with a heavy but proud heart. Michael always does what he feels he must do no matter how much it may pain him personally. To him, his duties as the Ruler of Heaven must come before himself despite how it could affect him. He presents a strong and firm front to keep all the diverse factions of angels in line. His iron fist tactics has made all other angels, even a few of his fellow archangels both respectful and fearful at the thought of him. He has little tolerance for disloyalty and doesn't hesitate to smite anyone who steps out of bounds that he feels he must. When he returned from his exile in the Cage he resumed this to be done on angels that lowered themselves to side with demons as that was not his idea of what angels are supposed to be.

Michael: The First and Oldest Angel

However, it seems as if he has a great deal of pain locked within himself, which is revealed to be the loss of his son due to his own father's wrath. He hides it all away under the strong and serious front that he presents so well that very few even know of his pain. The only ones that knew of Mikhail being his son and his pain at his loss being his father, archangel brothers, his subordinate Joseph, the traitor Barbatos and, due to their long time in the Cage together, his vessel Adam. To that end, he loses himself in his work as to both distract him from it and express his grief with it.

When out in public Michael presents himself with indifference, poise and grace, much like that of a prince. He carries a confidence about himself that is highly contagious especially amongst the Powers. This has also made most think of him being a hardened and stone cold soldier and commander. This steadfast persona though is a wall that he has built to hide behind since the time of his brother Lucifer's banishment and later the Rebellion following his son's death and father's departure. He is adamant about keeping appearances and taking out anything that compromises or challenges that image with his fellow angels. Such as when he worked to hide the fact that being in Hell had a strong effect on him as he isn't healing as fast as he would like as he feels that he can't afford to appear weak next to Samael. Michael hasn't let himself trust anyone with what lies behind that wall he's built save for a very select few, being Janis, Mikhail, Joseph and Adam Milligan. While personally and privately involved with them, Michael has let himself show humor, happiness, doubt, pain, weakness, and even love which could contradict the image Michael tries to paint for himself. He seems assured that they are somewhat 'safe' to let those parts of him show.

Michael has shown that he possesses a soft spot for honor and has been known to express forgiveness though it doesn't come easily. Michael also has let himself show bits of a sense of humor and irony. He is also shown to be fearless, as he is quite possibly the only angel who is not afraid of his younger brother Samael, whereas even the Powers and Castiel were afraid of the second oldest Archangel's dark side.

Michael tends to keep his poise and not much triggers him but he does have his buttons. When they're pushed, he can get so mad or blinded, making him vulnerable to losing a good degree of his focus and sense. Things that do get to Michael is having his personal convictions or private honor is attacked or challenged and Michael could quickly start becoming angry and irrational. It was this type of blind anger that inevitably caused him to be vulnerable and fall into the Cage in the first place as he was trying to stop Sam Winchester from denying him what he felt was his sworn duty and destiny in defeating his brother Lucifer. Among the greatest bouts of anger he feels are against his brothers Lucifer and Samael and how their vices had drove away their father and cost him the life of his son.

Powers and Abilities[]

Michael is the oldest and strongest of the Archangels created by God thus making him one of the most powerful beings in creation.

  • Nigh-Omnipotence: Michael was the very first and most powerful angel that God created making him an immensely powerful being, surpassing all other Angels, even Samael and Lucifer. He was able to fight alongside his Father and archangel siblings against a powerful force like the Darkness and achieve victory. Michael even was made to be able to fight against creatures as primordial as the Leviathan. It seems that only his father God, aunt Amara, and Death outclass him. His power is so great that even Gabriel had to hide from him and Raphael was careful to take power only once he was firmly sealed away. Even Castiel powered by Purgatory's souls was wary of Michael's power and preferred him to stay locked in the Cage for security.
  • Nigh-Omniscience: Michael has been around since before the creation of man and even the creation of the rest of the angels thus making him quite knowledgeable of much of history. He has seen many events through time at a focal view point that few have documented let alone witnessed.
  • Hand to Hand Combat: Michael is able to skillfully fight and fend off most foes without the use of his powers or a weapon with his bare hands.
  • Swordmanship: He is quite skilled with the use of a blade as he could fend off multiple foes at once. Michael was able to meet blade for blade against 6 members of The Powers in a training skirmish. It is said that only his archangel brothers would be able to match him blade for blade.
  • Michael Sword: Michael wields an archangel blade different from his fellow archangels. It is made from the same metal as the Holy Grail.
  • Possession: Michael can possess anyone descended from Adam and Eve's bloodline. He has possessed both John Winchester and Adam Milligan though it is written that Dean Winchester is his true vessel. After the events of the Apocalypse and being in the Cage he is content to remain within Adam's body.
  • Angel Banishing Sigil Immunity: The sigil to banish angels away has no effect on him when he is in a vessel of Adam & Eve's bloodline.
  • Angel Ward Immunity: Symbols to ward a building from angels can not keep out Michael as long as he is in a vessel of Adam & Eve's bloodline.
  • Teleportation: Michael has the ability to transport himself anywhere and can teleport others to any point on Earth or even to Heaven with a snap of his fingers.
  • Time Travel: Michael is able to go anywhere in the past or the future and is easily able to send anyone he wants through time.
  • Astral Projection: Michael is able to send his consciousness across great distances in order to appear to and communicate with people without physically having to be there. When he does this, he can appear as anyone he wishes though he has taken to use Adam Milligan's image as his primary appearance.
  • Prophet Tether: Michael is an archangel and thus tied to a prophet, able to immediately sense when he or she is in danger and immediately arrive to quell the threat.
  • Power Granting: Michael is able to bestow strength and abilities to others through use of his grace. He gave a small portion of his grace to Adam which allowed him to gain a few abilities as well as slightly augment his strength to aid him on his mission.
  • Angelic Restoration: Michael is able to heal and restore the broken or weakened grace of an wounded angel. It can be used to restore the wings of an angel that has had them clipped off. It is a powerful process and only Samael has been shown to also have this power as well.
  • Angelic Upgrade: Michael is able to raise the status and rank of a low class angel to a higher level though only as high as the level of the Powers. He has used this power on Abel to raise him to the level of the other Powers.
  • Celestial Transformation: Michael has the unique power to take a human soul in Heaven and transform it into an angel. However, he does need the human to consent to the transformation before he can perform it.
  • Reproduction: When inhabiting a vessel, Michael is able to sire children with humans. He had only ever had done this once with a human woman named Janis who gave birth to his nephilim son Mikhail.
  • Telekinesis: Michael is able to move or throw multiple objects and people through the air without physically touching them.
  • Levitation: Michael can hover, float up and move through the air at will.
  • Energy Blast: Michael can unleash a burst of pure energy against anyone or anything that could reduce them to ashes if they aren't powerful enough to sustain themselves against it.
  • Pyrokinesis: Michael is able to have anything or anyone spontaneously burst into flames by simple touch, these flames are spiritual in nature as they have been shown to kill the true form of angels. He was also able to display his wings in the shape of golden colored fire.
  • Dream Dropping: Michael can infiltrate a person's dreams to communicate with them. He displayed this by speaking with both Adam and Dean in their dreams despite being cloaked and hidden.
  • Resistance to Holy Fire: While most angels burn away due to Holy Fire Michael will be pained but he will survive.
  • Healing: Michael is able to instantly heal wounds and internal deficiencies of any human he touches.
  • Resurrection: He is able to bring any human back to life unless he is blocked off from doing it by either God or Death.
  • Summoning Spell: Michael can be called to descend on an area by an enochian spell as demonstrated by both Zachariah and Adam Milligan.
  • Multi-Linguistics: Michael can speak, read and write in any language, including sign language.

Weaknesses[]

As powerful as Michael is, even he has his limitations and vulnerabilities.

  • Holy Fire: If he isn't in his true vessel Michael could be bound in a circle of ignited holy oil for a small amount of time. Direct contact with the fire could harm and banish him away momentarily.
  • Archangels: Michael's fellow archangels are capable of harming, even killing Michael if he is not careful. Even nephilim sired by them would potentially also be capable of slaying him should they have the power or the means.
  • Lucifer's Cage: The prison built by God to suppress and contain an archangel and their power, keeping them locked for good. Michael had been trapped and suffered in there for over five years and left him internally wounded and weak after he was freed.
  • Sealing Sigil: An enochian sealing spell circle could keep Michael bound until it is either broken or he vacates his vessel.
  • Death's Scythe: This weapon from Death can be used to kill Michael.
  • The Darkness: The Darkness, which rivals his father, is able to trap, harm and even kill Michael.
  • God: His father has the power to trap, harm and even kill him.

Facts and Trivia[]

His name means Who is like God. September 29th is the Feast of Saint Michael, a day dedicated to Michael which has been also dubbed 'Michaelmas'. Kevin referred to this day as the Feast of the Archangels as it was called on the Angel Tablet which could be because this day is dedicated to the very first one. This also happens to be his vessel Adam Milligan's birthday.

Angels had been commonly portrayed as sitting on clouds and playing harps. It turns out that the origin of that conception was from Michael who sat on high terraces or on the roof of his son's home and played a harp for his Nephilim son during his childhood. He is also the only angel who had a 'partner' that survived giving birth to a child he conceived.

Michael has played 30,000 chess games with Adam, all of which he has won. This has driven Adam to one day to keep trying until he finally manages to win against him.
